A testament to tradition and resilience, Quinta do Montalto's Nao Condenado Tinto is a remarkable wine with a story as unique as its flavor. This "uncondemned" wine is a labor of love, born from a collaboration to save abandoned vineyards in the rural areas north of Lisbon.
These ancient vineyards, planted by grandparents and tended by their dedicated descendants, were on the brink of disappearing. However, a passionate winemaker, Andre, joined forces with Portuguese Story to rescue these historic vines and craft a wine that celebrates their legacy.
This organic, minimal intervention wine is a field blend of old vines, primarily Fernao Pires (a white grape) and Trincadeira (a red grape), along with other local varieties. This unique blend, known as "palhete," was a traditional method in central Portugal for centuries. It involves co-fermenting red and white grapes together, creating a wine with a captivating complexity and a story to tell.
A Wine with a Past, Present, and Future
The Nao Condenado Tinto boasts a beautiful light red color and entices with aromas of black and red raspberries. The palate is juicy and bright, with a burst of brambly berry fruit and a refreshing acidity that lingers on the finish. This wine is a true expression of its terroir, showcasing the unique character of the land and the grapes that were nearly lost to time.
