Paolo Bea San Valentino Rosso 2019 is a vibrant and authentic expression of Montefalco Rosso from Umbria's legendary Paolo Bea estate. Following the family's natural winemaking philosophy, guided by the influential Giampiero Bea, this wine comes entirely from the organically farmed San Valentino vineyard. This site boasts impressive 50-year-old vines rooted in limestone-clay soils, contributing unique depth and concentration.
The classic Montefalco blend of Sangiovese (70%), complemented by Montepulciano (15%) and Sagrantino (15%), undergoes spontaneous fermentation after manual harvest. True to the Bea style, it sees an extended period of skin contact, typically 30-40 days, extracting complex flavors and textures. Uniquely among Bea's red wine lineup, the San Valentino then ages exclusively in stainless steel tanks for approximately three years. This extended period on fine lees builds complexity while preserving the energetic fruit character without any oak influence.
Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfur, the 2019 San Valentino bursts with personality. Expect an exuberant, complex nose often described with notes of Indian spice, dark fruits, and sandalwood, potentially lifted by a subtle, characteristic hint of volatility – a Bea signature. Despite its richness, the wine remains remarkably balanced, showcasing the unique terroir of old vines and the singular, "unabashedly wild" spirit of Paolo Bea wines.
