Paolo Bea Pipparello Montefalco Rosso Riserva 2018 stands as a profound and characterful expression of Umbrian red wine from the legendary Paolo Bea estate. Guided by Giampiero Bea's deeply rooted natural winemaking philosophy, this bottling captures the authentic spirit of Montefalco through traditional methods and extended, patient aging. It originates entirely from the hilltop Pipparello vineyard, featuring limestone-clay and gravel soils and vines averaging at least 20 years old.
This classic Montefalco Rosso Riserva blend combines Sangiovese (70%) for vibrancy, Montepulciano (15%) for softness, and the powerful local grape Sagrantino (15%) for structure. Following organic practices and a late manual harvest, the grapes ferment spontaneously in stainless steel. A signature of the Bea style is the exceptionally long skin maceration—lasting 40 to 50 days—which builds incredible depth, tannin, and complexity. The wine then ages extensively: 12-24 months in steel, followed by 24 months in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti), plus further rest in bottle before release.
True to the Bea family's uncompromising ethos, Pipparello is unfined, unfiltered, and bottled with no added sulfur. The 2018 vintage is noted for its large scale and intense concentration. Expect ultra-savory aromas hinting at camphor, black olive, and earth, interwoven with high-toned spice. The palate is arrestingly dense yet possesses remarkable energy—a complex, powerful, and deeply authentic wine.
