Our Russian River Selection bottlings are meticulously crafted from some of the finest vineyards in the region, showcasing the unique terroir of the Russian River Valley. This Chardonnay is no exception, artfully blending fruit from several distinguished vineyard sites to create a wine of exceptional complexity and depth.
The foundation of this Chardonnay is laid by the naturally balanced character of Westside Farms, providing a solid core of flavor. Bacigalupi Vineyard adds intriguing floral and stone fruit notes, contributing to the wine's layered complexity. The great concentration and structure are derived from nearby Rochioli and Allen vineyards, while Olivet Lane Vineyard, featuring the Wente clone, infuses the wine with refreshing citrus tones and vibrant acidity.
The 2020 vintage was a fascinating one, marked by unique weather patterns that ultimately shaped this exceptional wine. The growing season commenced with an unusually dry winter, leading to water stress in the vines. However, this stress resulted in beautifully concentrated grapes, a hallmark of this vintage. The summer months were mild, allowing the vines to bask in the sun and produce a balanced crop with small to moderately sized clusters. While late-summer wildfires interrupted the harvest, both the winery and the vineyards remained unscathed.
The winemaking process was executed with precision to preserve the grapes' pristine characteristics. Harvested at an optimal ripeness of ~21-22.8° Brix, the fruit underwent a meticulous hand-sorting process. The juice, bursting with varietal expression, was then gently fermented and aged in a blend of 30% new and 70% one to three-year-old neutral French oak barrels and puncheons for 9 months on its primary lees. This careful approach resulted in a wine of exceptional finesse.
