Nestled in the quaint village of Villeneuve-sur-Vere, between the historic towns of Albi and Cordes, lies Domaine Philémon, a vineyard with a rich history dating back to 1804. Today, Mathieu Vieules, a descendant of the original Vieules family, helms the vineyard, cultivating not just grapes, but also wheat and sunflowers. Mathieu's commitment to organic farming earned the vineyard its organic certification in 2013, a testament to his dedication to sustainable agriculture. The vineyard, named in honor of Mathieu’s great-grandfather, Philemon, boasts twenty hectares of vineyards on the sun-drenched Cordes plateau, where traditional Gaillac grape varieties flourish in the calcareous soil.
The Gaillac Rouge "Croix de la Bouscarié", a wine that encapsulates the essence of Domaine Philémon. This cuvée is crafted from Duras, a grape variety deeply rooted in the Tarn region and a cornerstone of Gaillac’s red wine production. With vines planted in 1990 and 2003 by Mathieu and his father, the Duras is harvested first among the red varieties at Philemon, yielding a wine of profound depth and character.
The "Croix de la Bouscarié" is a tribute to the meticulous cultivation practices at Domaine Philémon. Its low-yielding vines result in a wine that is strikingly dark, with hues of purple, mirroring the richness of the soil from which it springs. The wine's savory and spicy flavors dance on the palate, offering a smooth journey without the interruption of discernible tannins. This wine is not just a drink, but an experience, embodying the history, dedication, and craft of Domaine Philémon.
