Experience the exceptional Daniel Chotard Sancerre Blanc “Cuvee Marcel Henri Denise,” a testament to generations of winemaking expertise in the Loire Valley. This special cuvee honors Daniel Chotard’s father and uncle, Marcel and Henri, as well as his mother, Denise, using fruit from the domaine’s oldest vines, some reaching over 65 years of age. These venerable vines are rooted in the esteemed Lieu Dit Champs d’Aligny, where a blend of clay, limestone, and Kimmeridgian marl soils imparts a distinct minerality to the wine.
Crafted by Daniel’s son, Simon Chotard, this Sancerre Blanc showcases a commitment to organic practices and a pursuit of authentic terroir expression. The wine undergoes vinification in large oak vats called foudre, followed by a year of aging in the same vessels. It is then racked to stainless steel tanks for an additional six months of maturation before bottling. Notably, this Sancerre does not undergo malolactic fermentation, preserving its vibrant acidity and freshness.
Simon Chotard is known for his dedication to natural winemaking, even harvesting later than his neighbors to achieve full-bodied wines with rich complexity. He also ferments every wine naturally, a rarity in the Sancerre appellation. The aging in foudre contributes a unique texture and depth to this Sauvignon Blanc, setting it apart from more conventionally produced Sancerres. Expect a wine with pronounced minerality and a long, satisfying finish, a true reflection of the Chotard family’s passion and the exceptional terroir of Champs d’Aligny.
