Cabreo Il Borgo Toscana Rosso 2018 is a celebrated Super Tuscan from the esteemed Cabreo estate, and this particular vintage marks a noteworthy evolution in its renowned style. Sourced from vineyards perched at 984 feet on stony soils just above Greve in the Chianti region, this wine is named for the charming, historic village of Montefioralle that overlooks the vines, embodying the spirit of its picturesque Tuscan surroundings.
The 2018 Il Borgo presents a renewed and harmonious blend, a triumvirate of nearly equal parts Sangiovese (34%), Cabernet Sauvignon (33%), and Merlot (33%). This thoughtful shift, as noted by Wine Advocate (92 points), results in a wine with a softer mid-palate and a very contemporary, accessible personality, while retaining depth and structure. After fermentation with extended maceration to enhance its rich body, color, and texture, the wine is matured for an impressive 24 months in French oak barriques, followed by at least six months of refinement in bottle before release.
This meticulous crafting yields a wine lauded for its complex and charming aromas. Expect an inviting bouquet that weaves together notes of dark cherry, ripe currant, and warm spice, with sophisticated hints of bittersweet chocolate, rich mahogany, and classic cigar-box character (James Suckling, 94 points). A blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2018 Il Borgo is a renewed wine with this vintage. Past editions saw a blend of mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role. This release is softer on the mid-palate with darkly extracted fruit. The wine reveals dark cherry, spice and hints of bittersweet chocolate that give it a very contemporary, accessible personality. Fruit is sourced from across 40 hectares of vine.
