Discover a rare gem with Alexander Zahel's Orange Traube, a unique white wine with a fascinating history. This wine is made from 100% Orangetraube grapes, a variety that has been part of the Zahel family's vineyards in Vienna, Austria, since 1930. Interestingly, Alexander Zahel is now the only producer in Austria crafting a single-varietal wine from this historic grape.
The name "Orange Traube" comes from the slight orange color the grapes develop when they are perfectly ripe. While the name might suggest an "orange wine," this is a distinct white wine. The winemaking process involves a brief 36-hour contact with the grape skins before pressing. This short skin contact adds a touch of complexity and texture to the wine. It then undergoes spontaneous fermentation and ages for six months on its lees in stainless steel tanks.
The Zahel family practices biodynamic viticulture, certified by Demeter, reflecting their deep respect for the land. The 45-year-old vines grow in Flysch sandstone on Dolomite limestone, contributing to the wine's character. Historically, Orangetraube was often found in field blends and used in sweet wine production in Austria. Karl Georg Zahel first isolated this grape as a single variety in 1966, and Alexander proudly continues this tradition. This is a rare opportunity to taste a piece of Austrian wine history.
