What is "SHISO"?
Shiso is the present common name for the Asian culinary herb, seed(spice), and the entirety of the Preilla frutescens plant, which belongs to the mint family. The whole leaf of green shiso is often used as a receptacle to hold wasabi or various garnishes on a sushi plate.
The Japanese Bitters Shiso is an extract of Perilla frutescens, belonging to the mint family. Shiso is the now common name for the Asian culinary herb, seed(spice), or entire annual plant of Perilla frutescens variety crisps, belonging to the mint family.
Creator, Yuki Yamazaki, formed his vision for a line of Japanese bitters after making cocktails during a charity event at the Japanese Embassy in Toronto in 2011. The drinks were so popular, and guest’s interest in classic Japanese flavors so piqued, that he immediately started planning a larger-scale production. In 2015, Yamazaki travelled to the Herman Jansen distillery in the Netherlands to learn more about distillation. Upon his return to Japan, he implemented what he had learned and spent a following two years perfecting his Shiso, Yuzu, and Umami bitters.
Prepared using only blue shiso, carefully selected from the long-lasting plantation Aoba, which cultivates the highest quality of shiso in Chiba prefecture, which is also the heart of Japanese bitter production.
