Rey Campero Mexicano Joven Mezcal is a distinctive and robust spirit, often described as a "whiskey drinker's mezcal," crafted in the small village of Candelaria Yegolé in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Produced by the esteemed Maestro Mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada, this mezcal is made from 100% Mexicano agave (Agave rhodacantha), a rare variety that requires eight or more years to mature. The production process is deeply rooted in tradition: the agave hearts are slowly cooked in a conical earthen pit, then crushed using a traditional stone tahona. Fermentation occurs naturally in open-air wooden vats, allowing the terroir to fully express itself. Finally, the fermented mash is twice distilled in small, wood-fired copper pot stills, a method that imparts a signature earthy character.
The nose of Rey Campero Mexicano is bold and assertive, dominated by aromas of fresh rawhide, tobacco leaf, damp garden soil, and vibrant bell peppers. The palate offers a compelling contrast, introducing notes of warm cinnamon and bright citrus alongside the grounding flavors of wet cedar and subtle orchard fruit. Despite its initial intensity, the mezcal maintains a rich, baritone quality, leading to a delicate finish that gently fades into notes of white flowers and peppercorns. With an ABV of 48%, this Joven Mezcal embodies the passionate spirit of Rey Campero, whose name translates to "King of the Countryside," reflecting their deep connection to the land and their tireless dedication to harvesting the finest agave.
