Experience the timeless appeal of Averna Amaro, a true embodiment of Sicilian heritage. Since 1868, its secret recipe has been a cherished tradition, passed down through generations of Italian families. Crafted with a meticulous blend of herbs, roots, and natural spices, its complex flavor profile captures the essence of its sunny island home.
Averna's journey began centuries ago with Benedictine monks. The heart of the production remains in Caltanissetta, Sicily, ensuring its authenticity. A lengthy infusion process, unchanged since its inception, gives Averna its distinctive bittersweet character. Expect vibrant orange and licorice notes, balanced by hints of myrtle, juniper, rosemary, and sage.
Averna is a taste of Sicily itself – a rich, satisfying liqueur that transports you to the heart of the Mediterranean.
I never gave any thought to Averna, let alone making cocktails out of it. But after a trip to Huckleberry Bar in Brooklyn, all preconceived notions went the way of Hot Toddys come Easter. This Italian amaro, a blend of herbs, roots and citrus rind, has a distinct caramel note, thanks to the late addition of natural caramel in the distillation process. It works wonders in cocktails. I tried making a cocktail at home, and I'm sure there will be a round two. Try a recipe!
